Bone Grafting and Tissue Regeneration

Teeth are anchored into your mouth by an area of the jawbone called the alveolar ridge. This area of bone surrounds each tooth root, securing the tooth in place. Gum disease and tooth loss can lead to bone loss which will begin to break down the alveolar ridge bone. Once this bone begins to deteriorate and is gone, your jaw will be unable to hold your natural teeth or dental implants. The good news is we can grow new bone with a dental bone graft surgery.

Patients who choose dental implants and suffer from bone loss in their jaw may require a bone grafting or tissue regeneration procedure before their implant placement. Dental implants need a substantial amount of bone tissue for long-term results. If a tooth was lost or extracted many years before the implant procedure, the bone may have begun to deteriorate. If a patient does not have enough bone tissue to support a dental implant a bone graft can rebuild the ridge for a more stable implant placement.

Bone Grafting What to Expect

Dr. Anil will determine if a patient requires bone grafting for the success of their dental implant. Using state of the art dental technology and 3-D imaging, Dr. Anil measures the patient’s bone density. The bony ridge commonly becomes too thin to place an implant when tooth loss goes untreated.

Patients who require bone grafting will have a choice of material options to use for the graft including their bone. These options will be reviewed during the patient’s consultation.

Bone grafting can typically be completed from the comfort of our Sterling dentist office. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during treatment. CDS offers sedation methods for those experiencing dental anxiety for their optimal comfort.

After the graft is complete, patients will take about 3-6 months to heal fully. Once the bone graft has successfully treated, the implant procedure can take place. Dr. Anil will then be able to surgically place your dental implants which will require an additional 3-6 months of healing to ensure that the implants have fully fused with the surrounding bone. The bone graft is an essential step to ensure the success of your implant surgery. Next, we will attach your dental restoration to the dental implants. Dr. Anil and our dental care team will help patients coordinate their phased treatment for optimal results.

Dr. Anil will determine a patient’s bone density during a personalized and comprehensive implant consultation. Many patients who require a bone grafting procedure have experienced a trauma that caused bone loss, or who have gone an extended period of time with out treatment after tooth loss.

Dr. Anil provides sedation dentistry options to relax patients and help them feel as comfortable as possible during their bone grafting treatment. Bone grafting is an advanced procedure and takes about 3-6 months to fully heal.
